Veliš hill (429 m asl) is the best and surprisingly little forgotten outlook point to Jičín basin, the Czech Paradise, Giant Mountains and immense Elbe plain in the south. Although it is lying on yellow tourist trail leading from Jičín to Ostružno (approx 6.5 km from the center of town), most people go by car to the village of Podhradí lying in the pass of the Veliš ridge – from here it is only a few minutes to the top. A popular option is to combine this short ascent up the hill with a cycling trip through the area of St. Mary's Garden.

Small Bell Tower in village Podhradí

The ascent route up the hill Veliš begins in the village of Podhradí nearby the small bell tower. There are few places to park on the roadside. The top of the peak with the observation tower is well visible from here.

The beginning of the ascent to Veliš

From the small bell tower, go 150 meters along the blind road slowly upwards until you reach the small plateau (about 390 m above sea level) lying in front of the entrance to the Veliš´s quarry. From here begins the final ascent to the hill. Lush vegetation covers in the summer entrance to this large basalt quarry, which you can also explore. The hiking trail bypasses it from the east and is unpleasantly slippery at two places. Only small remnants of walls remained here from the old castle ruined during the Thirty Years' War.

Observational column in Veliš

After a while you can see the top of Veliš with a strange building. You may think that it is a tower, but in fact it is used as a leveling point of the first category. This also confirms that the views of all sides are amazing if cartographers have chosen it as well.

View of Jičín

View of Jičín is undoubtedly the best from here in Veliš – behind the town you can see is a little chapel on a hilltop of Zebín, then the ridge separating the Czech Paradise or rather Jičín basin from the area under the Giant Mountains with the ruins of castles Kumburk and Bradlec and completely on the horizon Giant Mountains with the highest mountain in the Czech Republic – Sněžka and extensive massif of Černá hora (= The Black Mountain).

Trosky and Ještěd

Northeastern horizon is dominated by Ještěd. The dominant of the Bohemian Paradise is much closer – castle Trosky (= The Ruins).

Jičín´s basin

The view directly to the north is into agriculturally cultivated center of Jičín basin lying on both sides of the stream Porak. The horizon is flanked by with tourists the most popular Prachov Rocks, massive Přivýšiny (464 m asl) and small hill Brada. At the very back is Kozakov Ridge with probably the most famous tourist outlook in the entire Czech Paradise – Kozakov (744 m asl).

View to the southeast

Elbe basin planes are situated in the southeast direction. In the foreground there is a village Veliš with an interesting great church that is being gradually reconstructed.

Quarry in Veliš

Quarry in Veliš looks like an abyss overgrown with jungle from the top in the summer. If you go inside, you will be amazed by massive basalt walls.
