Cycling through the Marian Garden
To the southwest of Jičín is the so-called Marian Garden – a former estate of the Schlik family. In the otherwise predominantly agricultural landscape „behind Veliš“ located in the Mrlina river basin, you will find a number of sacred monuments. Getting to know this landscape is best from the saddle of a bicycle, because otherwise the kilometers here would run quite slowly. The goal of this ride is the tourists besieged Dětenice
Solitaire behind Jičín
From Jičín, set off on the yellow tourist path to Čejkovice. Right behind the village there is a famous solitaire in the field with views of the hills enclosing the Jičín basin.
View over Šlikova village
From Čejkovice along a pleasant road to Šlikova ves and from there a short but steepest ascent perpendicular to the contour to the ridge below Veliš. There is a small chapel, a nice view of Jičín and the meadow also serves as an emergency landing area for small aircraft.
Church of St. Wenceslas in Veliš
From the ridge down to the village of Veliš. Here we connect to the cycle path No. 14, after which we reach Dětenice. In Veliš, it pays to go to the village square, where the magnificent church of St. Wenceslas with many statues. Gradually, the facade is being repaired, so it already looks quite like the world
Church of St. Simon and Judy over Chyjice
From Veliš, the road leads along a dirt road, first a panel road, then the EU beautiful asphalt road to a significant dominant feature of the region – the church of St. Simon and Judy over Chyjice.
View of Veliš
From here, the ride is full of views of Veliš, Tábor and, with good visibility, the Giant Mountains on the horizon. To the north there are fields below you, to the south the terrain falls into the Mrlina valley and the local forest is protected in the form of the natural monument Chyjická stráň – it is probably mainly due to the fact that it is the only forest far and wide.
Wooden bell tower in Kostelec
The road will take you to Kostelec, where there is an interesting wooden bell tower in the cemetery near the church
Church of St. Martin in Udrnice
From Kostelec you will find a good descent to Dolan (so the name does not lie) and from there a ride through the Mrlina valley for a while. Then drive through the agricultural landscape through Keteň to Udrnice – about 7 kilometers without much interest along the way
Then a nice descent to Lebanon awaits you, but watch out for the narrow road there are holes and, surprisingly, there is quite a lot of traffic. In the center of Lebanon is a fairly monumental monument to Master Jan Hus and two refreshments
The last stage to Dětenice is waiting for you from Lebanon. Right next to the road is Čejk's pond with lots of birds. There is also an impressive oak on the dam.
After quiet kilometers, when you have not met anyone, you will come to the most visited place in the Marian Garden – Dětenice. The castle and the medieval inn really attract visitors from a wide area
Way back to Jičín
On the way back you can choose from several variants: – The shortest: Staré Hrady – Střevač – Podhradí – Jičín – West of the Marian Garden: Markvartice – Příchvoj – Jičín
