One of the most famous roads in the Alps
Grossglockner Hochalpenstrasse is the highest transit alpine road in Austria and one of the highest in the Alps. It winds over the ridge of the Hohe Tauern, Austria's highest mountain range. It connects the cities of Bruck and Heiligenblut. It is 48 km long with a maximum climb of 12%. It leads through two passes: Fuscher Törl (2,428m) and Hochtor (2,505m). There are also two more blind branches leading from it. The first, about a kilometer, to the Edelweisspitzi mountain (2,571 m), which the road culminates. Here the rise is up to 14%. The second, more than 10 km long, leads to the Franz-Josephs-Hohe hut (2,369 m), from where there is the best view of the Grossglockner and the Pasterze Glacier. So anyone who wants to see everything has to drive about 70km. In winter there is an average of 5 meters of snow and 250 days a year the precipitation is mostly snow, the highest section of the road has an average annual temperature of minus 3ºC. It began to be established in 1924 and was built between 1930–35.
Fusch
The Grossglockner road officially starts in the town of Bruck (760 m above sea level) in the valley of the river Salzach. It is quite a conveniently located place for excursions. From here you can also head to Lake Zeller, the Kaprun dams, the Kitzlochklamm gorge or the Krimml waterfalls. However, our path leads directly south through the valley of the Fuscher tal. Along the way is the gastronomic town of Fusch (820 m above sea level).
Ferleiten and Walcher waterfalls
After about 14 kilometers from Bruck, he arrives at the toll booth in Ferleiten (1,155 m above sea level). Currently, 35.5E is charged for all-day entry. There is a nice view of the Walcher waterfall from the toll booth. You can take a beautiful all-day walk around it: „Ascent around the Walcher waterfalls“: https: //www.gigaplaces.com/clanek-vystup-k-walcher-hochalm/
Views of the Hohe Tauern
Then you will find a number of beautiful views of the amazing peaks of the Hohe Tauern. Even a walk along the bottom of the valley must be worth it.
Views along the road
In nice places there are small parking lots from where you can enjoy. As everywhere else, going out in the morning is a good idea. In the afternoon, you may not even park some of the views.
Groses Wiesbachhorn
The dominant feature of the first part of the road is the mighty Groses Wiesbachhorn (3,564 m above sea level), which is one of the highest in Austria.
Fuschertorl Pass
From the last view of the valley, the serpentine section (13) begins to the Fuschertorl pass (2,428 m above sea level)
View of the Edelweisspitze
From the Fuschertorl pass, be sure to either walk or drive to the adjacent Edelweisspitze mountain (2,572 m above sea level), the highest point of the Grossglockenr road, which you can drive to. It is also, of course, a great view of the surrounding higher hills.
View from Edelweisspitze
The most beautiful view from the Edelweisspitze is down to the winding road and the walls of the Hohe Tauern. Just for that view, it was worth coming out here.
View of the Hochtor tunnel
From the mountain you can see the continuation of the road to the Hochtor tunnel (2,504 m above sea level) intersecting the main alpine ridge.
Fuscher lacke
Another pleasant stop are the lakes Fuscher lacke. An ideal place for a short picnic.
Above the Hochtor tunnel
The road culminates at the Hochtor tunnel (2,504 m above sea level). Here you can climb at least to the ridge with nice views. Otherwise, it is a starting point for several mountain tours, such as Mount Spielmann (3,027 m above sea level) or several peaks to the east.
A long descent from Hochtor
From the tunnel you will find a long descent to the other side of the mountains with beautiful views. However, the road itself has less serpentine on this side, so it is no longer so interesting. At the Golmitzerkasar crossroads (1,880 m above sea level), be sure to turn onto the dead end road leading to Franz Josephs Hohe (2,369 m above sea level). From here there are beautiful views of the Grossglockner and the Pasterze Glacier.
Großglockner Reservoir
The road to Franz Josephs Hohe traverses the slope of the mountain for a long time to make a huge bend at the end. Right next to it is a nice dam Großglockner Stausee. At the same time, it is a great starting point for an even higher lake and Mount Spielmann
Pasterze Glacier
It is only a short walk from the dam to Austria's most famous Pasterze glacier.
Grossglockner - the highest mountain in Austria
From the viewpoint there is a wonderful view not only of the Pasterze Glacier, but also of the highest mountain in Austria – the Grossglockner. The height is also a crossroads of many mountain tours, but mostly of higher difficulty.
Mölltal
Looking back, you can see the entire Mölltal valley, which we will continue on
Views of the Grossglockner
When driving in the direction of Heiligenblut, where the toll section of the road ends, you have many views of the Grossglockner.
Heiligenblut
Heiligenblut has a beautiful alpine church and of course a view of the Grossglockner.
