A classic walk in the area of the Kaprun dams
A trip to the Mooserboden dam is one of the most classic and beautiful in the Kaprun area. You can diversify your walk along the double dam with a very short ascent to the Höhenburg hill (2,108 m), on which both dams are „leaning“.
Monument to the victims of the construction of the dam
After leaving the Kesselfall Alpenhaus by bus to the dam (or alternatively ascending here on your own / 9km and 1100 altitude meters), you will find yourself at the memorial (Heidnische Kirche) to the victims of the construction of this monumental work. It is also such a signpost. From here you can go for a walk along the dike with an ascent to Höhenburg or go on hikes: south through the small and large Grieskogel to Hocheiser (3,206m) or north towards the cottage Heinrich Schwaiger Haus and further to the famous peak Grosses Wiesbachhorn (3,564m ). The main hiking trail through the Kapruner Törl saddle also leads here
Walk along the dike
The first dam is absolutely impressive, about 500 meters in length. On the horizon you can see a nearby destination – the hill Höhenburg. A ferrata is also built on the wall of the dam
View of the Kitzsteinhorn
When you turn back you will see a mountain road and a shuttle bus that takes tourists to the dams. The dominant feature of the horizon is the Kitzsteinhorn mountain (3,203 m above sea level)
View down to the Wasserfallboden dam
While walking along the Mooserboden dam, you can enjoy beautiful views of the Wasserfallboden dam 400 meters below
View over Lake Mooserboden
One of the most beautiful views on this walk is the view over the dam to the top of the Hohe Riffl (3,338 m above sea level) with the Karlingerkees glacier
View of the second dam
Behind the second dam, a winding path on the slope leading to the Heinrich Schwaiger Haus is clearly visible. If you want to have a nice view of the dams, be sure to go after it for at least half an hour.
Walk along the second dike
After crossing the first dam, we miss the ascent to the hill and continue for the second time a little shorter, about 330 meters long
Waterfall at the end of the dam
At the very end of the dam is a pretty nice waterfall. I have no idea how artificial it is, anyway, it flows out of a fairly large pipe
View of both dams
The engineers skilfully used the terrain and leaned both dams on the Höhenburg hill
At the top of Höhenburg
We return and take a short climb to the top of Höhenburg (2,108 m above sea level), it is about 90 meters above sea level and the viewing platform is quite worth it. There is also a smaller restaurant just below the top, so a good place to refresh
Panoramic view of the dam
From this point of view, you see both dams directly against you
