Settlement Ferleiten (1 150 m asl) is known mainly for the fact that there is a toll booth for the most famous Austrian high mountain road – Grossglockner Hochalpenstrasse. But you can, however, also set out for a great hike around the stream Walcher bach up to the farm Walcher Hochalm (1 855 m asl) located on the high mountain meadow surrounded by steep mountain walls. Along the way there are five beautiful waterfalls and interesting views of Ferleitental valley. The trip can be easily extended by either a short walk to the heart of the glacial cirque Schattseitkar or even better up the hill Horndlkopf (2 047 m asl) or farther up to the hillock Lackkopf (2 084 m asl), which promises great views of the surrounding three thousand high mountains.

Walcher bach

You can make a good idea about the hike already from the parking place. Stream Walcher bach falls from the upland meadows down 700 vertical meters. Our route winds up along it. On the left you can see forested massif of Horndlkopf (2 047 m asl).

The first waterfall

Steep ascent up is fortunately continuously rewarded by views of the beautiful waterfalls on the river Walcher. Overall, you will see them five!

Valley of Ferleitental

After a few dozen minutes of the ascent is deep valley bottom already below you.

The second waterfall

The second waterfall is actually two several meters high cascades. You will certainly meet here lots of happily grazing cows in its vicinity.

The third and fourth waterfall

The third waterfall is wild and romantic, and the fourth is the most formidable on this whole trip. And in addition, the path leads behind it and so you can enjoy the feeling of being „under the waterfall“.

Looking into the depths

Parking place and toll booth huddle really deep down from here,

The fifth waterfall

If you already see the fifth waterfall, it indicates that you are already up at the hut Walcher Hochalm and you have already managed the worst ascent. Most tourists end up basically here and they walk back down after refreshment at the hut. But you certainly extend the trip with a nice outlook peak Lackkopf.

View of Schattseitkar

From the hut there is a great view of the glacier cirque Schattseitkar and peaks Hoher Tenn (3 368 m asl) and Schneespitze (3 317 m asl). In the remnants of glacier springs stream Walcher, along which you have ascended for such a long time.

Upland meadow

The upland meadow is very picturesque in fine weather and you will hardly want to go back down.

The only drawback of this hike is that you will have to walk back virtually the same way.
