The Grossglockner Hochalpenstrasse is one of the biggest icons not only of the High Tauern, but of the whole of Austria. It is the highest through mountain road in Austria and one of the highest in the entire Alps. It is 48 km long. It leads over two passes: Fuscher Törl (2,428m) and Hochtor (2,505m). There are also two dead-end branches leading from it. The first, about a kilometer, to the mountain Edelweisspitzi (2,571m), which the road tops. Here the gradient is up to 14%. The second, more than 10 km long, leads to the Franz-Josephs-Hohe hut (2,369 m), from where the best view of the Grossglockner and the Pasterze glacier is available.
