In the Low Tatras you will find perhaps the most famous ridge in Slovakia and at the same time the most beautiful views of the High Tatras on the horizon. Outside the main ridge, you can take many tours from individual valleys and ranges. Apart from summer hiking, the Low Tatras are also interesting in winter for great cross-country snowshoe crossings. How to spend a great four days in the mountains
Crossing the ridge of the Low Tatras is a trek that can already test the physique and psyche. It is 97 km long and I climbed over 5000 m in 4 days. The beginning was in Donovaly and ended in the settlement of Télgárt. There are regular connections to both places from larger Slovak cities. Visiting Chopok is almost the duty of every visitor to the Low Tatras. The easiest way to get to the top is by using a system of cable cars either from the north or from the south. The upper station of the cable car is only a few tens of meters from the top. For those who prefer to climb the mountains on foot, there are several marked trails. Below is a description of the circuit from Demänovská Dolina, during which, in addition to Chopok, we will conquer 4 other peaks. Ascent to Ďumbier from Demänovská Dolina
The highest peak of the Low Tatras
There are a lot of possibilities to go to Ďumbier. For less able tourists, it is probably the easiest way to take the cable car from Demänovská Dolina to Chopok, from there up the ridge path to Ďumbier and return in the same way. From the south side it is possible to set off from the Čertovica or Trangoška or Srdiečka saddles, for example. This article describes a hike from the north side, from Demänovská Dolina. With its altitude, the Sina is far from equal to the highest peaks of the Low Tatras and will not interest you even when looking at the map. It might seem that it is just one of many ordinary hills. But appearances are deceptive. Its distinctive, far-visible peak strongly encourages it to be conquered and is definitely worth it. Circuit through Pusté and Sedlo pod Kúpeľom
Krakova hoľa lies outside the main ridge of the Ďumbier Tatras and with its height of 1,752 m above sea level it does not stand out in comparison with the peaks of the main ridge. So it's a bit neglected, but wrong. The top can be reached by several different routes. The route described below can be managed in about 9 hours, is about 18 – 19 km long and with an elevation gain of less than 1,700 m. continue reading
Ascent to Salatín
The forgotten peak of the Low Tatras
Salatín 1630m high mountain lying outside the main ridge of the Low Tatras. The best accessible route leads from the settlement of Ludrová near the town of Ružomberok. Thanks to the location of the mountain, it is little visited and at the same time there are wonderful views of the surroundings, where we can see Mala Fatra, Choč, the Western and High Tatras and part of the Low Tatras ridge. The ascent is not particularly demanding, but the circuit we went on is a bit lengthy to ascend (22 km). It is a regular all-day event. continue reading
