A small town with a small castle
The small town of Gérgal is just off the motorway linking Almeria with Granada on the slopes of the Filabres Mountains. An ideal place for a short break and an hour-long tour of both the large church and the interesting Castillo de Gérgal
View of the city of Gérgal
From the access road there are nice views of this small town and its two landmarks. The surrounding mountain slopes are full of walls, but instead of cultivated fields, only cacti grow here
Walk through the streets of Gérgal
Gérgal is such a mountain „pueblo blanco“ with white facades of houses, but at first glance it can be seen that his best years are behind him – he looks quite semi-deserted
View from the castle
The road winds towards the castle and gradually opens up quite a nice view of both the city and the Sierra Nevada in the background
Castle of Gérgal
The castle in Gérgal is small but interesting. unfortunately it is not accessible, it is a private residence
Surrounding fields
The local land is black, full of cacti. Are there remains, walls or strange dwellings for animals in the area?
One last view of the city
From Gérgal you can continue to the ridge of the Filabres mountains or on the motorway to Guadix or Almeria
