A small town under the famous castle
The small town of La Calahorra is a tourist destination for basically one reason – there is a beautiful castle of the same name La Calahorra. The city is also a good starting point for hikes to the Sierra Nevada. Outside the castle on a small hill above the town, you will find only a nice church. The city itself seems quite shabby and half deserted
Arrival to La Calahorra
The easiest way to get to La Calahorra is along the A-92 motorway connecting Almeria with Granada. From exit 312 it is only about 4 kilometers. Directly above the town rises a desolate hill at the top of which sits the famous famous Italian-style Renaissance castle
Church of Our Lady of the Announcement
Outside the castle, the only significant monument in the city is basically only the church Iglesia Nuestra Señora de la Anunciación
Half abandoned city
The whole city gave us the impression of abandonment and slow decay, which may have its charm for some
View of the castle
Even directly from the city you can see from many places the castle. A walk to it is probably the best thing you can do here – especially if the weather is good and the view of the mountains
Spring Sierra Nevada
Early in the spring there is still a lot of snow in the mountains. If you come here at the beginning of summer, you can have a nice ridge.
