The only semi-desert in Europe

Desierto de Tabernas is one of the biggest attractions in the province of Almeria in the southeast of Andalusia. This semi-desert landscape reminiscent of famous American badlands is the only one of its kind in Europe. Because it lies in the rain shadow, there is only about 200 mm of rainfall annually. This landscape of arid ridges and small valleys lies at an average altitude of 400m asl surrounded by two significantly higher mountain ranges – Sierra de los Filabres and Sierra de Alhamilla. It is interesting mainly for hikers, who can admire here not only admire bizarre rock formations. A number of Westerns were shot here, so there are three former studios that offer western programs.
