Ride on Passo dello Stelvio
Perhaps the most famous pass in the Alps
Passo dello Stelvio (2,758 m above sea level) is one of the highest and most beautiful alpine passes. It is interesting that you can go there from three directions: the most famous direction is from Prato (48 serpentines lead to the top), then from Bormio or the Swiss Val Müstair via another Umbrail pass. In addition, you can take a few hikes directly from the pass to the adjacent peaks or enjoy the view of the highest mountain of the former Austro-Hungarian Empire, Ortler.
Mountain views while driving on Passo dello Stelvio
Of the three possible directions to Passo dello Stelvio, the most famous is the one from Prato (915 m above sea level), where you have to conquer the famous serpentines. Almost two kilometers of elevation gain and a 25 km long hill await you. However, the mountain views are definitely worth it!
The beginning of the serpentine above Trafoi
The first kilometers are not so interesting. The real mountain ride starts with the town of Trafoi (1,565 m above sea level). Expect to meet significantly more cyclists and bikers here than at the Austrian Grossglockner.

From the road there is a great view of Ortler (3,905 m above sea level). This mountain of almost 4,000 was our highest mountain when we were still part of Austria-Hungary. However, it is better to be here in the afternoon for her photo shoot.

After passing a series of serpentines, there is a straight line and a menacing-looking rock wall behind it. From here you can at least see your goal.
The last 15 serpentines
You're almost there, but it's still 500 meters away. In this section, you are guaranteed to meet the most exhausted cyclists.
In the Passo dello Stelvio
In the pass, life is like a Wenceslas, especially when the weather comes out. The biggest fight is, of course, for a photo at the top sign.
Tibet Restaurant in Passo dello Stelvio
You can take three interesting walks from the pass. The shortest and most classic one leads to the Tibet restaurant from where there are the famous views from above of the serpentines.

From the restaurant there is a really great view of the top of the serpentine to the pass.
View of Rifugio Garibaldi
The second hike is to Rifugio Garibaldi (2,845 m above sea level). From here you can continue along the ridge (almost alone) to Rötlspitz or Punta Rosa (3,026 m above sea level). All with great views of Ortler.
View of M. Scorluzzo
The third hike is an ascent to the mountain M. Scorluzzo (3,094 m above sea level) on the slopes of which you will also find military fortifications from the First World War. From the top there is a great view of both the Stelvio pass and Bernina.
Exit from Stelvia
If you do not want to return the same way to Prato, you can go through the Umbrail pass to Switzerland or continue to Bormio.
