If you want to go to the Passo del Madriccio (3,123m) or even higher to the adjacent mountain Hintere Schöntaufspitze (3,325m), the top station of Funivie di Solda (2,610m) is the ideal starting point. The lower station is then at the very end of the Suldental valley at an altitude of 1,900 meters above sea level. It is a gondola, so the traffic is not so smooth. Plus there is a lunch break.

At the bottom station of the cable car

You can get to the cable car really easily. From Prato Allo Stelvio you head towards the famous mountain pass Passo Stelvio and after less than 7 kilometers in Gomagoi you turn into the Suldental valley. That's another 11 km to the very end of the road. Sulden itself is a lively alpine resort with plenty of other hiking options. At the lower station of the Funivia di Solda cable car, there are several large parking lots (free of charge) as well as refreshments and accommodation, such as the Lärchenhof hotel.

Start of the ride

First, you drive over the very end of this picturesque valley. There are two hiking trails below you – the main one basically going up under the cable car and the other one going to the Hintergrathütte mountain hut – the exit to the Ortler.

View back to the Suldental valley

The end of the valley is quite wide surrounded by mountain forests.

Bridges over waterfalls

After the former icefall, only a predatory stream remained. This part is the most attractive part of the ascent for pedestrians, there are two bridges over a raging stream rushing down.

Cable car intermediate station

There is an intermediate station above the former icefall, where you transfer to the second gondola. On the hill you can already see the final station and also the glacier on the mountains Suldenspitze (3,376m) and Corno di Solda (3,388m)

Remains of the Suldenferner Glacier covered with scree

The most attractive part of the cable car ride is above the gigantic remnant of the Suldenferner glacier, almost completely covered with scree. Historic, hundred-year-old photos show how monumental it once was.

High above the valley

We are slowly approaching the end and the Suldental valley is slowly disappearing into the depths.

View of Gran Zebra (3851 m)

Finally, we are at the end, on the viewing platform at a height of 2,610 meters, and we can enjoy the amazing view of the Gran Zebra – Königspitze

View of the Ortler

More to the right is Monte Zebrù (3735 m) and to the far right is the highest mountain of the Ortler range (3905 m), which due to distance and angle does not look as interesting as Gran Zebru

The upper station of the cable car - the starting point of the hikes

There is also a large restaurant at the top station of the cable car, which benefits from the one-hour lunch break. You can go on a number of hikes from here, but the most famous and most visited is the Passo del Madriccio (3,123m)
