The Třeboň “sea“ in the heart of South Bohemia
On the southern edge of the city of Třeboň, the Svět Pond defines the face of the city itself. This fascinating water feature is not only a place for fish farming and a recreational area, but also a living monument to Renaissance engineering, which for centuries has told the story of human ambition and the power of nature.
History
The story of Svět began in 1571. The then regent of the Rosenberg estate, the legendary Jakub Krčín of Jelčany, decided on a bold (and controversial for his time) step. He wanted to build a huge body of water right next to the walls of Třeboň. Krčín's pond was originally ironically named Nevděk, probably due to the opposition of the local residents who had lost their homes. The name „Svět“ was adopted later.
Technical parameters
Even after centuries, Svět remains a masterpiece of engineering. Its 1,557-meter-long dam is reinforced by centuries-old oaks, whose roots hold the structure together.
The Svět Pond is part of a unique pond network, which is fed by the so-called Golden Sewer. This artificial canal is the ingenious work of Štěpánek Netolický and provides fresh water and oxygenation to the ponds throughout the area.
Statue of Jakub Krčín
On the northern edge of the dam, a larger-than-life statue of Jakub Krčín from Jelčany and Sedlčany (1535–1604), a prominent pond builder from the 16th century, has stood since 2004. It is a monument dedicated to the Czech pond builders Jakub Krčín, Štěpánek Netolický and Mikuláš Ruthard.
Recreation
The pond is a popular place for recreation. On the shore you will find several well-maintained beaches. A popular attraction is a cruise on a cruise ship, which regularly crosses the surface and offers a view of Třeboň from a completely different perspective. The pond is also used for rowing, and championship competitions are held here.
