A Renaissance pearl in the middle of the South Bohemian marshes
The dominant feature of the spa town of Třeboň is the Třeboň State Chateau, which is one of the largest and most important chateau complexes in our country. The chateau is not just one building, but an extensive area that has developed over hundreds of years.
History
The originally Gothic fortress became a residence that was loved by the Rosenbergs and Schwarzenbergs. In the 16th century, Italian builders transformed the austere fortress into a representative Renaissance residence. The iconic courtyards with arcades and the rich sgraffito decoration of the facades date back to this period. Later owners added external Baroque fortifications and modified the interiors to match the comfort of the period
Renaissance residence of the last Rosenbergs
Třeboň was the heart of the dominion of the last Rosenbergs. William of Rosenberg and his brother Petr Vok created a cultural center of European importance here. Petr Vok even had the famous Rosenberg library and archive moved here. Tradition has it that the castle was full of alchemists at that time (including the famous Edward Kelley and John Dee).
Schwarzenberg's Christmas residence
aristocratic elegance. Třeboň became their favorite winter residence, while they spent the summer in Hluboká.
Present
In 1947, the castle was nationalized and is now under the administration of the National Heritage Institute. A significant part of the castle was also occupied by the State Regional Archives in Třeboň until 2024, which houses the original Rosenberg archive, which was reproduced during the Schwarzenberg era.
Interior tours
The castle offers several sightseeing routes that will satisfy history lovers and families with children:
Castle Park
West of the castle itself is the castle park. Once there was waterlogged terrain, but at the end of the 16th century, under Petr Vok, the castle garden began to be created. The fundamental change in the arrangement of the garden into the current English park occurred in 1804. After 1945, the park was opened to the public.
The castle park is currently a popular resting place for Třeboň citizens, tourists and spa guests. It is an oasis of peace with exotic trees and peacocks, which smoothly transitions into the dam of the Svět pond.
