The history of the castle is a fascinating showcase of architectural styles. It all began in the 13th century, when a Gothic castle of the Lords of Hradec was built here. In the 16th century, the rough castle seat was transformed into a representative chateau. In 1773, the Hradec Králové chateau burned down and began to fall into disrepair.

In 1976, a general reconstruction of the area began, which lasted almost twenty years with breaks. The dilapidated castle complex was saved and reopened to the public in 1993. Today, the castle shines in its full glory and is alive with culture, concerts and night tours. It is also a popular destination for filmmakers (for example, the fairy tale From Hell to Happiness was filmed here).

Today, the castle offers several tour routes that will satisfy history and art lovers, and the Černín Picture Gallery is particularly noteworthy, where you will see works by Baroque masters in authentic interiors and the castle kitchen, which is one of the best-preserved black kitchens in our country.

The fountain in the 3rd courtyard of the Jindřichův Hradec castle dates from the turn of the 16th and 17th centuries. It is complemented by a reconstructed, richly decorated wrought iron grille.

Between 1591 and 1596, Italian builders conjured up beautiful arcades and a unique garden gazebo, the Rondel, on the rock above the confluence of the Nežárka and Hamerský creek, which is considered one of the pinnacles of Mannerism in Central Europe.

In addition to its representative purposes, the Rondel was mainly used for organizing balls and music concerts. It is interesting that the musicians played in the cellar under the building and the sound spread through an opening in the floor. During the decline, the space was used for a time as a woodshed, a game storehouse or a stable. Fortunately, a general reconstruction of the castle buildings took place in the second half of the 20th century and the Rondel is once again serving its original purpose. The incredible acoustics and rich gilded decoration are worth noting, which will transport visitors to the times of noble festivities.
