A massive ruin in the middle of the beautiful landscape of Czech Canada
The massive ruins of Landštejn Castle are located at the top of a distinctive hill about 3 km northwest of the Old Town below Landštejn. The castle is a unique originally Romanesque complex and is one of the most important monuments of its kind in Europe.
Royal castle
The Landštejn Royal Castle was founded after 1222 by the Czech King Přemysl Otakar I. as a guard castle to defend the country path and the border with Austria. Later it came under the administration of the Vítkovci family. The Krajíř family is behind the reconstruction of the castle into a more comfortable Renaissance residence. After them, he quickly changed owners and let go. It is now state-owned and open to the public.
Castle tour
It is not performed at Landštejn Castle. After paying the entrance fee in the first gate, you walk through the complex yourself. During a separate tour you can walk through the uniquely functional architecture of the castle and the chapel of St. George. The abandoned castle quickly fell into disrepair, became a source of building materials for the surrounding villages and later a romantic ruin. The castle is currently undergoing extensive reconstruction.
Landscape view
Definitely do not hesitate to climb the higher tower, which is arranged as an observation deck. The circular view of the wide surroundings in the beautiful landscape of Czech Canada is worth it.
