Jindřichův Hradec – what to see
A South Bohemian gem above the Vajgar pond
40 km northeast of the regional capital České Budějovice lies a picturesque South Bohemian town boasting the third largest castle complex in the Czech Republic. The historic core of the town, founded around 1220, was declared a municipal monument reserve in 1961. The 15th meridian of eastern longitude runs through the town centre and a popular narrow-gauge railway runs through the town.

The Museum of Jindřichův Hradec is located on Balbín Square and holds over 50,000 items in its collection, which represents more than 100,000 collection items of extraordinary historical, artistic and documentary value. The Krýz Nativity Scene, the largest folk mechanical nativity scene in the world, a unique collection of mostly Gothic sculptures and a unique set of painted sharpshooting targets and target weapons are exceptional. Jindřichův Hradec – Castle Mill
Museum of fish farming, forestry and historical power plant
On the northwestern side of the castle stands the oldest mill in the city, built in the first half of the 15th century. In the 16th century it was expanded and rebuilt in the Renaissance style. Another intervention was carried out by Count Evžen Karel Černín in 1853. In 1887 it was converted into a hydroelectric power plant. In the building you can see an exhibition focused on fish farming and forestry in the Jindřichův Hradec Králové region and an exhibition dedicated to František Křižík and the hydroelectric power plant. continue reading

The narrow gauge railways of Jindřichův Hradec are a unique feature of Czech railway transport.
