Changu Narayan Temple is located on a hill, just a few kilometers north, from the famous and frequently visited city of Bhaktapur. It is probably the least visited UNESCO monument in the vicinity of Kathmandu, so you can enjoy a relatively intimate atmosphere. The whole area is relatively small, but the temple itself is worth seeing.

Entrance gate to the historic part

From Thamel in the center of Kathmandu, it is about 20 kilometers to the parking lot in front of the eastern entrance gate. It is ideal to arrange a taxi. Of course, agree on the price before the ride. Admission to the complex is also collected at the car park

Historic alley in Changu Narayan

There is definitely no way to get lost in Chang Narayan. From the gate to the temple it is about 250 meters along a historic alley surrounded by souvenir stalls (practically the same assortment as in Thamel).

Changu Narayan Museum

On the way to the temple you can admire the beautifully carved doors. It is possible to visit a private museum, we did not try

Changu Narayan Temple

At the very highest point, in the center of a small square, is this magnificent Hindu temple. Definitely worth seeing the temple carefully, you will find a lot of interesting details

The temple and its surroundings

Soldiers are guarding around the temple to keep an eye on tourists, not to enter the temple or try to take pictures of its interior.

Details of Changu Narayan Temple

There is actually nothing else to see outside the temple, so there is no point in hurrying when you have already weighed your way here. The advantage really is that compared to other monuments in the Kathmandu Basin, there are orders of magnitude fewer visitors

West staircase

From the temple you can continue west and go down a long staircase. This is in case you want to look at the lookout or you plan as we do then to continue on foot to Bhaktapur through the agricultural landscape

Under the stairs

From the stairs, continue down the street to the very end of the village. There really isn't a single tourist here anymore

View of the region

At the very end is a nice view of the region and several benches. But you must not be here like us, at the end of November, when it is beautiful in the mountains, but the basin is drowning in inversion and smog.

Bad

Taková "příruční" památka bez turistů. V podstatě se vám nikdo nevnucuje a vlastně si vás ani nevšímá. Ideální na oddechnutí si od davů... 4*
