Northwest Cliffs and Porto Moniz
Madeira is an island in the Atlantic. That is why, as on many other islands surrounded by stormy ocean waters, there are such attractive coastal cliffs and often the vagaries of ocean weather. This is doubly true of the northwest coast of Madeira. Wonderful views from above of the roaring water element, direct contact with the forces of the ocean on the coast, and a visit to interesting settlements. This trip is challenging especially for the car and its engine, for passengers it is an interesting trip with nice views.
Waking mountains
It is no exception that the mountain peaks are covered with snow during the night, especially in the winter months. Overcoming the Encumeada mountain saddle can then be problematic for a car with summer tires. Fortunately, the snow disappears quickly from the road, so we can continue along the ER110 road to the west shores of the island.
Western cliffs
There are long steep walls along the west coast, which are difficult to overcome by descending to the Atlantic coast.
Weather
Not bad weather, it's just inappropriate clothes. That's how it goes in the ocean. A heavy rain shower approaches the western edge of Madeira.
Achadas da Cruz
The view of this settlement from the top of the cliff is truly aerial. However, it can be reached by an attractive descent along a narrow path, or you can use a much more comfortable option, descent and exit by cable car.
Porto Moniz
The serpentines take us down to the ocean to the town of Porto Moniz. Although most of the ocean waves are pretty wild, there is a swimming pool built between the cliffs, where you can safely indulge in water fun.
Wild coast of Madeira
In Porto Moniz we can walk along the coast and enjoy the natural elements.
Volcanic material
The strange basalt shapes of coastal cliffs are very attractive and often create a kind of cauldron in which water is „boiling“ and roaring angrily, driven by the foamy waves of the ocean.
North of Madeira
The entire northern coast of the island is lined with mountain peaks. Their peaks are often hidden in the clouds, which then do not save moisture. Sao Vicente is hidden in the middle of the island cliffs on the right when viewed from Porto Moniz.
