The best of the island of eternal spring
Madeira is definitely one of the most beautiful islands you can find in the Atlantic. Its dramatic appearance is given mainly by the steep, almost two thousand mountains rising just a short distance from the sea. Volcanic peaks rise above the trade wind clouds surrounded by green slopes of the island, which are interwoven with irrigation canals levada. The island offers a number of beautiful trips both by car and on foot
Ascent to Pico do Arieiro

Hike to the peninsula of Sao Lourenco
The easternmost tip of the island
Ponta de Sao Lourenco is a popular tourist destination. While the rest of Madeira abounds in lush vegetation, this part of the island is very dry. Only in the winter months do interesting plants turn green and bloom here. The hike is not particularly strenuous, its charm lies mainly in the views of the wild rocky coast. However, the wind usually blows here continuously and in its gusts it tries to keep both tourists and landing planes, which approach the airport in Funchal through this eastern area. continue reading
Tour Levadou das Rabacas
A short walk with beautiful views
Thanks to the irrigation system called levads, Madeira has a number of beautiful hiking trails with minimal elevation. Irrigation canals have been built here for centuries to get water from the interior to fields with sugar cane and vines. They are up to a meter deep, their condition is currently very diverse, as well as the quality of the paths leading along them. A short walk along the Levada das Rabacas can begin in the saddle of Encumeada, where there is a parking lot at an altitude of 1007 meters above sea level, or in the parking lot a few hundred meters in front of the saddle at the eponymous hotel Encumeada. The reward for this undemanding short, one might say sightseeing walk are the magnificent views of the surrounding mountains and lush vegetation. continue reading
Levada Hike 25 Fontes
From Rabacal to 25 springs
One of the most beautiful levada tours in Madeira leads through mysterious tree heaths and laurel forest with views of the high Risco waterfall to a romantic place called 25 springs. The starting point is the parking lot on the road ER110. From here, a descending narrow path leads to the Rabacal Forest Administration building. It is not such an attractive part on foot compared to the following laurel forest and levada, so it is better to take the journey on a small minibus that runs here. continue reading
Tour of northwest Madeira
By car and on foot NW of Madeira
The car is probably best used for moving around Madeira and exploring this island. The northern part of the island is rainier and richer in moisture than the more exposed tourist south.
