Ponta de Sao Lourenco is a popular tourist destination. While the rest of Madeira abounds in lush vegetation, this part of the island is very dry. Only in the winter months do interesting plants turn green and bloom here. The hike is not particularly strenuous, its charm lies mainly in the views of the wild rocky coast. However, the wind usually blows here continuously and in its gusts it tries to keep both tourists and landing planes, which approach the airport in Funchal through this eastern area.

View

We drive to the end of the VR1 motorway and then to the end of the ER109 road, where there is a car park and information boards above Baía d´Abra with a description of the entire route. We continue along the marked path to a wonderful view of the cliffs of the north coast.

Abra Bay

Another ascent will take us to the lookout, from which there is a nice view back west to the bay of Abra and a rocky beach, to which a narrow path leads from the previous lookout.

Cliffs

From the same place, you can enjoy the view of other steep cliffs to the north. If there is a gust of wind, the experience is all the more attractive.

The next step will take us to the narrowest place ever, only a few meters wide neck, which is, however, secured by a fence. The rock falls on both sides to a depth of about 100 meters.

House of Sardinia

An oasis in the desert acts like an oasis in the desert, surrounded by date palms, which can be reached comfortably after crossing the previous narrow section of rock.

From the building begins a steep ascent along the weathered road to the top of Pico do Furado. The reward is a magnificent view of the rest of the peninsula, including the lighthouse in the easternmost part of Madeira, the small island of Ilhéu du Farol.
