Traveling

Do you have anything to say about this? Don't hesitate and write your information and experience to help other travelers.

Petr Liška Wrote 28.08.2013:

Traveling in Tibet is complicated because of bureaucratic regulation. You need a special permit in advance and ready to tour with an accredited travel agency. There is, unfortunately, not allowed individual travel.

Administrative division

Petr Liška Wrote 28.08.2013:

Tibet was historically divided into three major areas:

  • Tsang (now autonomous tibet region)
  • Amdo (now province Qinhai, here it is possible to move much more freely)
  • Kham (now one part lies in the eastern autonomous region and the second in Szechuan /here you can also move much freely).

Here we’ll write about the part Tsang.

Traveler Itineraries

Classic Itineraries

Petr Liška Wrote 28.08.2013:
  • The most common way to travel to Tibet is by air directly to Lhasa. – A much more interesting option is to arrive in Lhasa by train from Golmud, which crosses several passes, of which the highest Tanggula (5,072 m above sea level) is also the highest place in the world where the train goes. This is usually done within a large circuit around China.

Combination with neighboring countries

Petr Liška Wrote 28.08.2013:

A very common variant is a combination with Nepal. It includes a drive on the Friendship Road from / to Nepal. Road trips are sometimes combined with flying there or back.

Journey around the World

Petr Liška Wrote 28.08.2013:

One of the branches of the great roads from Europe to China also leads through western Tibet. Unfortunately, thanks to all possible restrictions and permits, it is rarely undertaken.

The most beautiful areas

Petr Liška Wrote 28.08.2013:
  • ** Southeast: ** area of the most important cities and monuments (Lhasa, Shigatse, Gyantse), but also the highest mountains (Mount Everest, Cho Oyu, Shishapangma). Basically, the whole area lies in the Brahmaputra basin north of the main Himalayan ridge – ** Southwest: ** here is the icon of the most sacred mountain in the world Kailash. – ** The center and north of Tibet: ** The whole area is practically desolate, hundreds and thousands of kilometers, where only a very minimum of people live.
