You will probably begin the tour around the capital of Tibet, Lhasa (3 660 m asl) by walking around its center, which is considered to be Jokhang Temple. Through the streets of old Lhasa you get below the landmark of the town Potala, in which is a number of attractions. Within walking distance, although a little bit longer from the center, is still interesting Norbulingka. The surrounding neighborhoods are newly built unified settlement, which is not worth a visit.

Jokhang Monastery

The center of Lhasa is Barkhor square with the holiest temple in Tibet bearing the same name. You will see here a lot of praying people.

China versus Tibet

On the other side of the square there is a strange decor as a China's counterweight.

Architecture of old Lhasa

All older buildings around the square Jokhang have the same nice architecture with lots of windows and white facade.

Streets in old Lhasa

Streets in the center of Lhasa are surprisingly clean and tidy. Most of the tourists that you will meet here are Chinese. However, the ubiquitous military and police presence is not very pleasant.

Commerce arrived also here and it is not difficult to come across shopping centers and shops with luxurious goods around the historic center.

Impressive Potala

You will see this amazing symbol of Tibet every now and then. Please see the photoreport here.

Monument to the Peaceful Liberation of T

Just opposite Potala stands a Chinese monument with a curious name „Memorial for the Peaceful Liberation of Tibet“. The reason for the iron cover is obviously not pedestrian safety not to fall into a busy road separating this monument from Potala.

Monastery Palpa Lupuk

Very nice building in Lhasa is Palpa Lupuk monastery stuck on a rock of sacred mountain Chokpori. In addition, there is also a very nice view of Potala from here.

Norbulingka

The summer residence of Dalai Lamas Norbulingka is more than 2.5 kilometers from Potala along busy roads. It's actually a park with lakes surrounding a small castle. The admission fee is relatively high… 80 RMB.

Golden yaks

You will find out very soon that except for amazing Potala and a few other major attractions there is not so much to see in Lhasa. Some of the „attractions“ look pretty kitschy such as monument with golden yaks.

Lhasa river

Quite nice are the views from the waterfront of the river bordering the town from the south.
