Very nice two days trip from Lhasa leads to, for Tibetan sacred, lake Namtso surrounded by six thousand meters high mountains. If you don´t need to return to Lhasa and want to continue exploring Tibet by less frequently walked routes, you can alternatively go through very high pass Suge la (5 450 m asl), which is also a shortcut to Shigatse or Gyantse.

Day 1

The way to the lake

On the first day of this trip awaits you several hours of driving to the lake. Along the way, you can enjoy beautiful views of the Tibetan landscape below the mountains of Nyenchen Tangla mountain range. After accommodating at the lake, go explore not only its banks but also beautiful sacred rocks hung with prayer flags and small shrines in caves.

Namtso (4 729 m asl) is the largest lake lying in the Autonomous Republic of Tibet and also one of the highest located lakes in the world. It also boasts with beautiful mountain views thanks to seven thousand high mountains range Nyenchen Tanglha (Nyainqêntanglha) stretching to the south of the lake. Locals see it as a sacred lake since groups of pilgrims from all over Tibet have been coming here in ancient times. Unfortunately, due to asphalt road over the pass Laken la (5 190 m asl) it became the favorite destination of mass travelers, mostly Chinese, which takes away the romance from this place a little. Fortunately, it is possible to walk around the surroundings, which is a little bit freer. continue reading

Day 2

Short walks at the lake Nam tso

There are basically only two possibilities for short outings on the sacred peninsula – walk around the peninsula (about 4 kilometer hike) or ridge way either in the western or eastern direction. You can go back the same way or alternatively via pass Suge la, but this only if you continue on to Shigatse.
