The main pilgrimage site of the islands
Legend has it that sometime around 1390, two fishermen from the Guanche tribe found a miraculous statue that waves washed ashore. The Black Madonna, located in the local basilica, has made Candelaria the most visited place of pilgrimage in the Canary Islands.
City streets
Turning No. 17 takes us from the TF-1 motorway to the city center. There are pleasant narrow streets full of shops and cafes. There is an ocean right next to the center.
Bethlehem
It's before Christmas, in one of the alleys we find a really big nativity scene.
Bethlehem
If you know our nativity scenes, you will certainly appreciate some scenes that depict completely different activities and objects, typical of local life.
Aisle
The local facades are diverse – new, old, peeling, but also with drawings.
Menceyes
In the Plaza de la Patrona de Canarias are statues of the nine kings of the island's original Guaneans. Nine because the island was originally divided into 9 kingdoms, called Menceyatos. The names of the kings sound exotic: Acaymo, Adjona, Anaterve, Bencomo, Beneharo, Pelicar, Pelinor, Romen, Tequeste.
Places of pilgrimage
The Ermita de San Blas and its interior are incorporated into volcanic rock. The basilica was built between 1949 and 1959 and with its internal capacity of 5,000 people is one of the largest Spanish temples.
Beach
Candelária is located in the immediate vicinity of the Atlantic. Tenerife is not a typical „bathing“ destination, but the black volcanic sand encourages water fun, depending on the water temperature in the ocean and the height of the waves.
