The beginning of the trip to the south of the island of Boa Vista
One of the most popular excursions on the island of Boa Vista is a trip by all-terrain vehicles along the deserted south coast. At the very beginning of the trip, you will enjoy driving along the sand dunes stretching out on Praia de Chaves beach
Column of all-terrain vehicles
The trip with off-road vehicles is organized by travel agencies and therefore departs from the hotel. Since I organize this trip only about twice a week, quite a large convoy of cars leaves the hotel. Four people sit on the cargo bed with a view, four more inside.
The way to the viewpoint
The landscape is impassable for an ordinary car and the distances are relatively long for pedestrians, so this trip to explore the south of the island is worthwhile. (Possibly renting a car is a question of whether it is worth it – there are relatively few ordinary roads here)
South end of Chaves beach
Above the beach of Chaves rises a cliff several tens of meters high, which has functioned as a kind of sandbox and captures the sand brought by the wind from the Sahara (from Senegal). This is how the local beautiful dunes were created. The first stop of the trip is precisely the place on the southern deserted part of Chaves beach, where there is a nice view of the oak trees.
On the lookout
Below us lies the sea and in front of it a small desert. On the other side is a barren volcanic landscape
Under the lookout
There is a parting at the viewpoint, so it is worthwhile to walk a little further and enjoy the dunes in more peace
South end of Chaves beach
If you are staying in hotels at the northern end of Chaves beach, be sure to take a longer walk to the southern end, where there is such a fabulous landscape
The highest mountains on the horizon
Boa Vista is a relatively flat volcanic island, but even so you will find several peaks that stand alone above the surrounding landscape. To the left you can see the peak of San Antonio (379m) and more to the right the table mountain Rocha Estância (354m)
Endless beach
The Prai de Chaves beach itself is 5 kilometers long, and apart from the northern end, the coast here is completely untouched.
Continuation of the trip
We say goodbye to the dunes and drive towards Turtle Bay
