The ascent of the highest Asia's volcano Damavand is the most famous and also the most frequently walked hike throughout Iran. The mountain benefits mainly from its good accessibility (less than two hours’ drive from the capital city Tehran), mountain hut and relatively simple normal ascent route. Most visitors struggle here with symptoms of mountain sickness due to the altitude (5 610 m asl) and poor acclimatization. Smokey fumaroles near the top and the clouds unfortunately obstruct the nice views from the top, so here is certainly true that the views of the volcano are more beautiful than views from the volcano.

Day 1 - From Tehran to Rineh

There are two ways to get from Tehran to the town below the volcano Rineh, either by taxi or bus heading to the Caspian Sea. In Rineh you can either accommodate and walk around or move on to BC camp Gusfand Sara, if you want to sleep higher.

Day 2 - Ascent to Camp 3 Bargah

This day is relatively short. You ascend from the hut Gusfand Sara to the hut Bargah within 4–5 hours. It is already quite high, over 4 200 m asl, so if you have underestimated acclimatization, you will suffer the symptoms of mountain sickness and your chances of reaching the summit will be highly reduced. Therefore, devote at least a day or two to acclimatization before you set out for this ascent. Here are possible tips:

  • Hikes in the ridges of Ebrat and Doberar (also easily accessible from Rineh)
  • Mountain Tochal on the outskirts of Tehran
  • Ascents from Iranian ski resorts (e.g. Dizin)

Day 3 – Summit day

If you set out very early in the morning, you can ascend to the top, run back down and get back to Tehran in the evening. Everything depends on your condition and weather, which can be very tricky at the top.
