The shortest, simplest but also the most frequent way to the top of volcano Damavnad is so-called „South Route“. To get to the start of this tourist route, you must first move from Rineh (Reyneh) /also called as Camp 1/ (2 050 m asl) for 7 km along the asphalt road in the direction to Polour (alternative start) to the gravel turnoff (2 445 m asl). From here then for another 6 kilometers along the dirt path full of curves to Camp 2 Gusfand Sara (3 020 m asl). Here just begins at least a two-day lasting ascend to the top of volcano and back. At this stage, however, you ascend, along a relatively comfortable path, only to Camp 3 Bargah (4 240 m asl).

Gusfand Sara

After the off-road gets you off at a slightly hostile place Gusfand Sara, typical for the golden mosque, you will be caught up by a fellow selling permits for 50 USD. Permit will probably be required in Camp 3 Bargah. Except for the mosque, there is also a simple accommodation. Damavand is still relatively nice from here, but the closer and higher you are, the peak itself will gradually disappear and the endless volcanic slopes will be waiting for you.

Herds below Damavand

Not only tourists have their base in Gusfand Sara. There are also herdsmen with their cattle grazing grass in the lower parts of the volcano.

Above Gusfand Sara

After ascending a few altitude meters is nicely visible the entire camp Gusfand Sara. Just across the river Haraz is visible the mountain ridge with dolomitic walls and even further four thousand high ridge of Doberar, which is also a popular tourist destination renowned for views not only of Damavand, but also of interesting lakes Tar and Havir.

Poppies

Throughout the first two hours of the ascent you will be in the summer accompanied by beautiful poppies, interestingly contrasting with the otherwise poor vegetation on the slope of the volcano.

Volcanic rocks

The ascent trail itself is very well distinct. It is sometimes variegated by volcanic rocks.

Gusfand Sara on the horizon

Gusfand Sara will slowly disappear on the horizon after an hour ascent. In the plains high above the canyon of river Hazar is visible also the panoramic road connecting Polour with Rineh.

Donkeys

The relatively monotonous and not very interesting ascent can be liven up by the view of the herder’s tents and grazing donkeys.

Mules with supplies

Along the way you will surely see also mules supplying Camp 3 with food and soft drinks. On the horizon is nicely visible green oasis, so typical for the mountains of Elborz.

Camp 3 Bargah

After 4–5 hours ascent you finally arrive to Camp 3. First, you will pass the old bivouac, then quite large terraces ready for dozens of tents. Up at the top is the new big hut (4 240 m asl), where you will spend the night before the ascend to top itself.
