Hohenschwangau Castle is directly opposite Neuschwanstein Castle in Schwangau in Bavaria. The castle was first mentioned in the 12th century as Schwanstein Castle, the seat of the Schwangau nobles. In the following centuries, it changed owners, fell into disrepair, was rebuilt and destroyed again. It was also the place where Louis II was raised.
