Just a few kilometers to the south of the famous Fernpass (1,212m) is the beautiful Fernsteinsee lake and right next to it the Fernstein castle of the same name. There are several free parking lots here, so it is not a problem to stretch here while traveling through the Alps and possibly even swim in the lake. You can make the walk short just to the view of the lake, or bypass it entirely, or add a walk to other smaller lakes further east.

View of Fernstein Castle

Right from the parking lot you have a pretty nice view of the castle surrounded by lush greenery

View from the bridge to the lake

Probably the best view of the Fernsteinsee lake is right from the road bridge.

Under the bridge

From the view of the lake we have to cross to the other side of the road and go down the path to pass the bridge and finally reach the lake

At the Fernsteinsee lake

The lake has beautiful clear and refreshing water even in the height of summer

Deep under the mountains

The lake itself is only about 940 m above sea level, so you can't even see the peaks of the Mieming Mountains, which are around 2,300 meters above sea level, in the southern direction.
