In the summer months, when temperatures rise above 25 ° C, Londoners try to leave the hot city and run to cool off to the sea. From the center you can get to the south coast by train in about 1h-1: 30h. Larger cities attract crowds and for example Brighton is a famous party city. I chose the smaller quiet town of Worthing, which lies southwest of London, for a relaxing summer day by the sea. Here you will find long pebble beaches, parks and excursions to traditional British-style seaside towns.

Worthing Town Hall

Walking from the train station to the beach, you walk through the city center, where you can see several historic buildings in a row and taste the calm rhythm of the city. The dominant town hall building with its antique-style columns is unmissable.

Museum and Art Gallery

Next in line is this brick building with a turret that houses a museum and an art gallery. Although Worthing is a small town, you will find all civic amenities and entertainment here.

Church in Worthing

Another in a series of these important buildings is this white church, which resembles a Greek temple.

Alleys in the city

The city is interwoven with picturesque streets with shops of all kinds. The summer atmosphere is completed by colorful flags fluttering in the sea wind.

Seaside promenade

Along the endless beaches there is a long pedestrian promenade, where in the middle there must be a traditional pier with attractions. On the promenade we find a dominant ferris wheel, which rises to a height above the heads of visitors.

Pier in Worthing

But the local pier is different from what we have met so far in other larger cities in the UK. Here, in contrast to the exuberant attractions full of space in other cities, it is a really peaceful walk with benches, just a few shops at the end. The wall in the middle of the pier is nicely designed, which makes a pleasant shade for sitting and at the same time is interesting in design. It consists of colored slides and between them pictures of historical figures with a hole in the visitor's head. Everyone can take a picture as a sailor, pirate or mermaid.

Still life on the pier with seagulls

Loud squeaking of seagulls is an integral part of the seaside towns in the UK. Here, too, we find them, but fortunately in much smaller quantities and intrusions than in larger cities, where people spoiled them by feeding their favorite fish and chips.

Promenade along the pier

The path on the pier leads along its entire length on both sides of the wall with colored slides and at the end of it you will usually find a bunch of boys fishing.

View from the pier

From the pier you also have a great view of the giant ferris wheel, so you can see it in all its size and beauty.

Beaches

And now, after exploring the city, it's finally time to take a look at why I came here and these are the beaches. The only thing I missed here was the opportunity to rent an umbrella. But this is generally the case on most British beaches, where they sometimes rent sunbeds but do not seek shade. It was possible to hide from the greatest heat on several shelters, which are located every few meters on the promenade, where you will find benches.

Colorful houses by the beach

The architecture of British seaside houses is mostly full of colorful pastel colors. Here, this street with a view of the sea in rainbow colors conjures a smile on the face of many passers-by.

Bathing

The beaches stretch as far as the eye can see to the right and left of the pier. Here you will find pebble beaches separated by wooden walls to break the waves. It is better to swim at high tide, because at low tide the sea goes far and you have to wade knee-deep in the shallows on slippery rocks before you can swim. Otherwise the cleanliness was great and the beaches much less crowded than in larger cities.

In Worthing you will also find such a magnificent promenade from 1925, which leads directly from the promenade by the sea. Time really stopped here.

Interesting architecture

Interesting buildings with typical British architecture can be found here almost every year. You will find this cute hotel just before the entrance to the train station.
