In the desert between the hotels Royal Tulip Beach Resort and Shoni Bay Resort, there is a small but still interesting diving site Abu Sayil. Of course, you can also snorkel here and explore the local underwater caves and canyons with lots of colorful fish. The location is easily accessible on foot if you are staying in one of the hotels listed above, or travel agencies sometimes come here as part of small trips to lesser-known locations.

We can start the walk to the Abu Sayil diving site, for example, at the observation deck at the Shoni Bay Hotel.

The northern part of the beach in Shoni Bay

So we head north along the so-called Relax Beach. There are really a minimum of people here, because you can't swim here.

Wasteland behind the hotel

As soon as you leave the hotel, the clean beach turns into a garbage dump, pieces of plastic are lying everywhere, which are slowly moving in a southerly direction – usually the wind here is from the north, often with a relatively strong intensity. In the desert, various unfinished buildings sometimes rise – so typical for Egypt.

Sporadic desert Egyptian vegetation

Sometimes, various hardy plants try to survive in the desert here. The horizon is dominated by low yellow ridges and even higher mountains reaching several hundred meters above sea level

How to know that you are finally in the right place?

 – First, you can look at the GPS coordinate of this photo

 – You will come across a dirt path leading here from the road or a van with divers will be parked here.

 – But above all, directly opposite you, a rock will rise out of the water, this is the main orientation point, because you can climb into the water near it.

 – In addition, a hundred meters from you (to the north) there will be a large thicket – when you reach it, you know that you have crossed it.

The ideal time to visit the place is at low tide. You must wear water shoes. The entrance to the depth is approx. 200 m from the shore – you walk along the coral flat. The snorkeling itself here is great, there are various underwater caves and canyons below you.

Bushes in the desert

If you continue your walk after snorkeling, you will come across two massive isolated bushes in the desert.

The beach of the Royal Tulip Beach Resort

Finally you will reach the second hotel Royal Tulip Beach Resort. Here they have such a wide shallow lagoon that the jetty into the deep water behind the reef is 700 meters long.
