A trip to the huge Beskydy castle
In the Palkovická hůrka mountains, which form the very picturesque Podbeskydí, you will also find the huge Hukvaldy castle. The castle once protected the busy trade route from Krakow to Olomouc. The ruins rise above a large field with fallow deer and mouflon, so the ascent to it is also interesting for families with children.
Hukvaldy
For most visitors, the starting point for the ruins is the village of Hukvaldy. You can park on the side of the road near the cemetery (free of charge) or in a large paid parking lot. You will come across a number of sellers of everything possible, because it is a very popular place. Buying frgals here is not a problem at all. There is not much to see in the town itself – the church of St. Maximilian and a small castle.
Fallow deer in the field
Enter the complex through the professional gate (next to the gate is the birth house of L. Janáček with the gallery and information center Hukvaldy). You don't have to be very lucky to see fallow deer and mouflons in the game.
Hukvaldy Game Reserve
The path leads through the field practically along the plain. Apart from fallow deer and mouflons, you will find beautiful trees, the Cunning Fox. Then the ascent up the hill begins. Here you will find the famous beeches with a massive exposed root system.
Entrance gate to the castle
After overcoming about 120 meters, you are at the massive entrance gate.
View of Palkovice hills
In front of the castle there are benches and a nice view of Palkovické hůrky, including the highest peak Kubánkov (660 m above sea level)
Massive fortifications of Hukvaldy Castle
The castle is famous for its truly massive fortifications. Behind the first gate there is another (until here the entrance is paid) reinforced by a bastion.
Courtyard with the church of St. Andrew
After passing the second gate, you will reach a wide area. This is dominated by the church of St. Andrew. In addition, there is a snack bar. But the best of the castle is still in front of you.
On the way to the inner castle
After passing another gate to the bridge over the castle moat, one of the most famous views of Hukvaldy Castle will open up to you – the so-called inner castle.
In front of the inner castle
The walls of the inner castle are absolutely impressive. The entrance to the castle is again small for tactical reasons.
The inner castle of Hukvaldy
The inner castle is a magnificent, originally several-storey building of which only walls remain
View of Podbeskydí
Not only the castle itself, but also the view from the top is worth the effort. The beautiful landscape of Podbeskydí is right below you.
View of the Beskydy Mountains
The horizon is again dominated by the Beskydy Mountains
View of the inner castle
Looking down is nothing for those who suffer from fear of heights
Castle moat and bridge
The rest of the castle can be partially seen from here.
Bastion Hukvaldy
Before leaving the castle, take a look at the huge bastion, which now serves as a theater stage.
Back in Hukvaldy
The way back is steeper and shorter. In a moment you will be back in Hukvaldy.
