An iconic log cabin that rose from the ashes
In the Beskydy Mountains, on the Pustevna ridge, there is the Libušín mountain hut, which is the work of Slovak architect Dušan Samuel Jurkovič. The building from 1899 bears the name of the legendary Czech princess Libuše and is inspired by folk architecture. The cottage has become a symbol of the Beskydy Mountains and a popular tourist destination.
In 1995, it was declared a national cultural monument.
Libusin
The cottage is a dominant feature of Pusteven. This Art Nouveau restaurant with a viewing terrace boasts rich carvings and a picturesque view of the surrounding hills. Its interior features typical Wallachian elements such as wooden benches and tables, tiled stoves and fireplaces, and the walls feature works by Wallachian folk artists.
In Libušín you can strengthen yourself with Wallachian specialties and enjoy the unique atmosphere of a stylish mountain pub.
Catastrophic fire
Libušín, a pearl of art nouveau architecture, fell victim to a devastating fire in 2014. On March 3, 2014, the cottage was destroyed by a large fire. The flames spread at lightning speed and consumed most of the wooden structure within hours. Firefighters battled the fire for several hours, but to no avail.
The fire consumed most of the structure, leaving behind only a charred torso. For many, it meant the loss of an irreplaceable monument and the heartbreaking end of a beloved tradition. Only the perimeter walls and the wooden structure of the roof remained.
From the ashes to life again
But fortunately, the story of Libušín does not end with the fire. From the ashes, a new Libušín was born, a faithful copy of the original structure, which reopens its doors to tourists and mountain lovers.
The fire sparked a wave of solidarity and fundraising for reconstruction. Thanks to the generosity of donors and the dedicated work of restorers, Libušín was rebuilt. It was built exactly according to the original plans using the technology of the time.
The grand opening of the renovated cottage to the public took place on July 30, 2020.
Rising from the ashes
Despite the destruction, a plan for the restoration of Libušín was immediately born. The Wallachian open-air museum in Rožnov pod Radhoštěm, under whose management the cottage falls, started work with vigor. Donors from all over the Czech Republic contributed to the restoration of this admired monument.
Reconstruction was a demanding and lengthy process. It was necessary to make faithful copies of the original wooden structures, decoration and equipment. The work was carried out under the supervision of preservationists and with the utmost effort to preserve the authentic appearance of Libušín.
New Libušín
After six years of hard work, the new Libušín was officially opened in 2020. Visitors can once again admire the beauty of Art Nouveau architecture and enjoy the unique atmosphere of this mountain lodge.
Nový Libušín is a faithful copy of the original building. Traditional materials and technologies were used and attention was paid to every detail. The interior is equipped with replicas of the original furniture and decorations, and replicas of paintings and photographs from the history of Libušín hang on the walls.
An extraordinary experience
A visit to Libušín is an unrepeatable experience. A walk along the wooden verandas, sitting in a cozy restaurant with a view of the Beskydy Mountains and a tour of the richly decorated interiors gives the impression of a return to the golden age of art nouveau.
