The starting point for the famous Mekong cruise
Probably the most famous Laotian attraction is a cruise on the Mekong from Ban Houayxay to Luang Prabang. In addition, this location is beautifully connected to the circuit of northern Thailand. Houayxay itself is a small town with a nice temple on a hill, just half a day before the cruise
Khunjing Road
Simultaneously along the Mekong, the main street / road leads through Houayxay. It has the most accommodation options.
Staircase to Wat Chomkao Manilat temple
Basically the only real tourist attraction of the town is the temple Wat Chomkao Manilat, so up the stairs uphill.
Looking down to the Mekong
Be sure to warm up slightly before climbing the stairs to the temple
Wat Chomkao Manilat
The temple is interesting and a little different than those in neighboring Thailand
Beautiful back of the temple
The back of the temple is really elaborate. There are small houses for monks around. Beautiful butterflies fly here as a bonus
Beer Lao
The people of Laos have a far greater relationship to alcohol than neighboring Thais. The local good beer Beer Lao, which is interspersed with brandy, is drunk here. So it's no wonder that you will easily meet drunken people in Laos after lunch. The bottles have a pleasant volume of 640 ml
In the Mekong
There is not much to do outside the temple outside the temple, so it is ideal to buy beer and spend time by the river before tomorrow's cruise.
Fishing boats at the Mekong
There is always something going on by the river – the preparation of cruise ships (which always enter only in the morning), fishermen and a ferry commuting between Thailand and Laos.
Cruise ship harbor
The port of cruise ships is located north of the city. In these long skinny barges you will sail for two whole days to Luang Prabang with a night break in Pak Bengu
