The capital of Dalmatian antiquity

Salona, as it was formerly called is today's Solin. It was the capital of the whole of Dalmatia, which was founded more than 2600 years ago. More than 60,000 people lived here at that time. Today it is one of the most important monuments of the Roman ancient empire and its scope is one of the largest in the world. Few people know that Salona was one of the largest cities in the Roman Empire. The city was surrounded by walls with 90 towers and a length of 4 km. Probably the most impressive building is the gladiatorial amphitheater. The salon is a little visited place
Gladiator Amphitheater
It originally reached three floors. It is elliptical in shape 125×100 meters outer. The interior is 65×40 meters. It accommodated around 15,000 – 18,000 spectators. Gladiator games were held here until their ban in the 5th century. The amphitheater was also used for public executions. In the background we see the new city of Split, which is 8 km away and where the people from Salona subsequently moved. 12 km from Kaštely. Possibility to get here both by car, by train or bus.

Basilica of the Five Martyrs
It is the first place from the Amphitheater that can be visited. The foundations of the Basilica and tombs can be seen here. These are all stolen. Nearby is the Necropolis with graves that turned out similarly.

Do you want to be Roman?
This is a remnant of the Roman Way. Why not go back 2,000 years.

Welcome to the center of Salons
Here we have the center Salons. There is a beautiful remnant of the walls along which our path leads. Around we have the foundations of houses in the distance then there are spas and the Basilica.

View of the Basilica and the spa
In the middle we see the exposed foundations of another basilica. There were a total of 8 of these basilicas in the town of Salona. To the left of the Basilica are the foundations of the town spa.

View of the spa
Again a panoramic view of the city spa behind which is the basilica. As the excavations are quite young and the area of Salony is large. It is possible that there will be further exposure of buildings.

Bridge with Five Arches
The bridge divided the river Jadro. This road then continued to branch. If we continue further, we will walk 500 meters to the Roman Theater. Yes, so far. This indicates the size of this archeological area.

View from the South
View from Porta Caesarea, which is one of the entrance gates. Here in the photo you can see that excavations are still being carried out, according to fresh clay. Maybe one day he will see the grandeur of this place.
