To the beautiful lagoons below Pucajirca
Alpamayo BC Trek – Sidetrip2: Lagoons Safuna Alta and Safuna Baja lie just off the main trek trail around Alpamayo, so they are definitely worth a visit, during which you will be able to enjoy the stunning view of six thousand high massif of Pucajirca. It is ideal to combine it with the crossing of Gara Gara pass that can be managed early in the morning, and lagoons will remain for the afternoon.
Ford across the river
If you want to get to the lagoons Safuna, you have to leave the main trek route around Alpamayo just below the pass and after you fall to the bottom of the valley of Tayapampa, walk up on a wider path. Once you overcome the ford, not very deep, but with extremely cold water, you get to a pleasant meadow, which can serve as an ideal camp.
The outlook of massive of Pucajirca
From the camp is a wonderful view of the entire massif of Pucajirca. In nice weather you can just pull a mat on the grass and you can enjoy it here for hours without having to do a single step. However, if you want to set out for another wonderful view, where you will have the massif even more at your fingertips, you need to go to the upper lake of Safuna Alta. To the lower lake Safuna Alta leads a broad comfortable path. However, do not expect any path later on (open terrain).
Lagoon Safuna Baja
It is less than a kilometer and less than 100 altitude meters from the campground to the lower lagoon, so you will get there in twenty minutes. But if you want to see something really beautiful, you must overcome one more moraine and ascend to the second lagoon.
Fabulous peaks of Pucajirca Norte
During the ascend you will still be accompanied by views of the entire massif of Pucajirca. The top towers of the northern part are really fabulous.
Lagoon Alta Safuna
You finally scramble to the top of the rocky moraine to about 4 390 m asl and you will see the beautiful blue gem of lagoon Safuna Alta surrounded by the massive Pucajirca dozen meters below you.
Panorama of lagoon Safuna Alta
On the way along the edge of the moraine, however, be very careful not to slip into the lagoon, because the slopes are steep and rocky. The views are still great.
Bofedales in the valley of Tayapampa
After you enjoy the view on the lagoon and surrounding mountains, you may be interested by the view back down to the grassy and slightly marshy valley of Tayapampa during the descent.
Alpamayo from northeast
Directly from the camp is also visible the peak of Alpamayo monumentally towering above the surrounding terrain.
Nevado Tayapampa
Directly above the camp tower also the peak of Nevado Tayapampa. Unfortunately, the most of the ice has already melted.
Pucajirca Norte
Of course, the most beautiful views from this camp are of the massif of Pucajirca.
Pucajirca Central and Oeste
Pucajirca Central (6 046 m asl) and Oeste (6 039 m asl)
