By land during the monsoon
Most tourists travel from Jomson to Pokhara by air. But if you cannot (e.g. your flight was cancelled) or don´t want to, you can manage this way by bus in favorable climatic conditions in one day. If there are landslides, you then need to bypass them by walking. This photoreport describes the way in the time of several landslides.
Below Marpha
The landscape changes behind Marpha. There's suddenly a lot of vegetation, moisture and occasionally a waterfall.
Nilgiri
The surrounding high mountains occasionally peek out from behind a cloud. We say goodbye to Nilgiri.
Stop at hotel Cascade View
The bus teeters above the precipice of Kali Gandaki River. The brakes suddenly grind and people are getting out. We are going to walk with our backpacks for about a half kilometer. There's a landslide. But Nepalis manage logistics well. Behind a turn appears another bus. We all literally cram inside again. The bus takes us to the hotel Cascade View.
Waiting for connection
The subsequent way is similar: crowded bus, swaying, brakes grinding and creaking of god knows what else. Again, we stop. People are again getting out. We have no idea where we are, but we do everything as locals.
Bus station
This time is the walk longer. We climb over a hill and leave the valley with a damaged road far below us. After a steep descent we are here. There are several buses and two SUVs.
Bridge
Driving here is full of adrenaline. We pay tribute to local drivers. The surrounding landscape is totally different than we were used to in Upper Mustang.
Road
The muddy road brings many surprises. Sometimes all the passengers must get out of the bus and the driver is tries to overcome the problematic section himself. Other traffic including our SUVs wait and we have an interesting theater.
Beni
Our driver is great. He transports us safely to Beni, from where leads a road to Pokhara.
