According to one version of the legend, Roland, a knight of Charlemagne, tried to destroy his miraculous sword Durandal by striking it against the rocks. The sword was not destroyed, but a huge hole was created in the rock face – today's Brèche de Roland.

Fog so thick it could be sliced

In the morning we set off from the Col de Tentes saddle (2208 m).

The weather is not very kind to us.

White darkness surrounds us along the narrow, stony path.

Up over the waterfall

After 4 km we first hear and then see a waterfall. The flowing water bouncing over the rock is from the remnant of the Taillon glacier.

Sticks in the backpack.

You will also need your hands to climb through the waterfall. :-)

Chalet Sarradets

The fog slowly recedes. Finally, it is possible to see the outlines of peaks and valleys.

Behind the waterfall, we will have a short rest at the Refuge des Sarradets.

La Brèche de Roland (2807 m)

This impressive natural wonder on the border of France and Spain is 40 m wide and about 70 m deep. Unfortunately, we cannot fully enjoy it due to the fog that is everywhere.

Return

We return the same way we came.

Finally the fog has cleared and we are enjoying the views.
