A walk through the historic center

Retz, located just a short distance from the border with the Czech Republic, is an excellent starting point not only for walks in the surrounding vineyards, but also for the Thayatal National Park. At the same time, it has a very picturesque historic center, which is perfect for a nice walk.
Hauptplatz Retz
The center of the historic center is of course the very picturesque Hauptplatz. Among other things, you will find here two fountains and a nice Marian column. The beautiful Verderberhaus dominates the northern side of the square. It is actually a combination of three original houses. The house is decorated with battlements.

Town Hall in Retz
The biggest dominant feature of the square is, of course, the local town hall. The foundation of this building was originally a chapel, which, like many other historical monuments of the city, was demolished by the Hussites.

Dominican monastery
If we walk from the square in a southwesterly direction, we will come across the vast Dominican monastery. Adjacent to the monastery is a bell tower and a massive church.

Entrance to the monastery
The monastery church has a white facade, while the monastery buildings are pink.

Castle in Retz
On the other side, at the southeastern end of the historic center, there is a local castle – Schloss Gatterburg. However, the pub next to it is more interesting for tourists.

City gate - Znaimertor
The last significant attraction of the city is the city gate in the north.
