The most famous Chilean geysers
El Tatio Geysers (4,270 m above sea level) is one of the biggest attractions offered by the Chilean side of the Altiplán. In addition, this largest geyser field in the Southern Hemisphere is picturesquely situated in a volcanic landscape with typical fauna and flora. If you don't mind getting up early and very cold before sunrise, be sure to go on a trip from San Pedro de Atacama.
Geysers before dawn
It always departs San Pedro de Atacama very early (around 4 am) to be there before dawn.
Geyser field
The entire geyser field is relatively large and lies only six kilometers as the crow flies from the Bolivian border.
Geysers
The individual geysers range in size from small holes in the ground to huge, smoldering „chimneys“.
El Tatio after dawn
After dawn, the temperature finally begins to rise from the usual night –15 degrees to zero.
Walk around
You can fill your free time before departure not only by swimming in the thermal pool, but also by nice walks around the volcanic surroundings of the geysers.
Danger of frostbite and scalding
When walking, however, be careful where you step. It is one of the places where you can, if you are „handy“ to bring frostbite and scalds in one day.
Border volcanic ridge
You will almost always have a border volcanic ridge in front of your eyes. Around you are huge boulders thrown away from ancient massive explosions
Golden grass
The passages of the frozen streams alternate with „meadows“ with golden-colored Altiplano grass.
The largest geyser
The steam from the largest geyser rises up to several tens of meters high.
