Riffa fort stands on the site of the original fortress from the time of Bahrain's rule by the Persian Shah Safavid. The fort was rebuilt during the reign of Sheikh Salman bin Ahmed Al Fateh Al Khalifa in 1812 and was the seat of government until 1869. Riff's Fort is now known as Sheikh Salman bin Ahmed's fort.
