Historic fortress
Arad Fort is one of Bahrain's most important historical sites and a fine example of traditional Islamic military architecture in the Persian Gulf region. This 15th-century fort is located on the northern coast of Muharraq Island, near what is now the international airport, and once played a key role in defending the approaches to the capital.
Classic Bahraini fort
The fortress has a typical square layout with four massive corner towers and strong earthen and stone walls, which were designed to withstand attacks from both land and sea.
Unfortunately, the fort was closed during our visit and the guard was unable to answer when it would reopen to the public.
View from the fortress
From the fort, the skyscrapers of Manama can also be seen on the horizon.
Seef Mall
Right next door is a large shopping mall that apparently has more visitors than the closed fortress.
