Or less known places in the Bohemian Central Mountains
Boreč Hill is not distinguished by its height or breathtaking views, but above all by its uniqueness. This National Natural Monument excels in its climate, as the air is warmer than the surroundings. The mystery of what happens inside the hill was explained in 1881 by the Prague university professor Jan Krejčí – Boreč is actually a hollow mountain, interwoven with a complex fissure labyrinth. In the lower part, the hill sucks in cold air, inside it heats up and at the top the air comes out warmer up to 16 ° C compared to the surroundings.
Ventaroly
The most interesting thing awaits us at the top of the hill. Places where hot air exhausts can be observed have their own professional designation – ventaroles. Rare liverworts and bright green mosses can be observed close to the exhalations. It's really noticeably warmer in the holes and in front of them than around. The top of Boreč is also the only place in the territory of our state where a rare borečka grows, a Mediterranean species of liverwort that needs moisture and heat at the same time to live.
Foot of the hill
At the foot of the hill you can see the holes through which cold air enters the interior of the hill. Here, on the contrary, it is noticeably colder. At the same time, it is the only place in the whole area where there is still snow.
Liverwort
If you go to Boreč in the spring months, you will get a view of the forest full of flowers of the liverwort.
Bare hill
If you go from Boreč to the village of the same name, you will come across a yellow tourist sign. If you follow it, a small bald hill with the characteristic name Holý vrch will soon appear on your right hand side. There is no marked path leading to this, but it is possible to climb it on a well-trodden path. It is necessary to add that although there are not many views on Boreč, Holý vrch offers a really beautiful view of the surroundings.
View of Boreč
From Holý vrch you can see all the way to Lovosice, above which the Lovoš hill rises. In front of Lovoš, however, you can also see our previous destination, Boreč.
