The Bohemian Central Mountains from a bird's eye view
A very nice experience that you can experience in the Bohemian Central Highlands is a balloon flight. It is most often flown in its central part around Terezín, Litoměřice and the Elbe canyon. With good visibility, you can see dozens of kilometers around. The actual flight takes about an hour, but with the preparation of the balloon and the transport to the take-off and landing place, expect around three hours at least. It is ideal to fly in autumn, when the surrounding forests are beautifully colored
Preparing the balloon for takeoff
After the flight participants meet, they move to the take-off location, which is determined according to the current air situation. So the flight path is never clear. After selecting the take-off field, the balloon is unwrapped and the still cold air is forced into it using a fan
Hot air balloon take off
After enough air is forced into the balloon by the fan, it starts to be gradually heated by the burners. After that, passengers board one by one. They mostly fly 4–6 plus a balloon captain. Some baskets have doors, some you have to climb into, which can be a bit of a problem for passengers with reduced mobility
The small fortress of Terezín
We climb up and along the river Ohře we approach the Small Fortress of Terezin. It is an infamous prison. During World War II, when she served the Gestapo. The Terezín Memorial is now located here
Flight over Ohří
We fly over the Ohří, the fourth longest river in the Czech Republic. The interesting thing is that it originates in Germany. The bridge over the Ohři is a link between the Great and Small Terezín fortresses.
Center of Terezín
Right next to it is the very core of Terezín, the center of the so-called Great Fortress. In the middle is the square and the Church of the Resurrection of the Lord.
View of the Great Terezín fortress
The view of the defense system of the Great Terezín fortress is optically interesting
Panorama of Litoměřice
A beautiful panorama of Litoměřice opens before us. The Tyrš Bridge, 400 meters long, crosses the Elbe. In the northeast of the city is Mostná hora (276m) with the Mostka lookout
The center of Litoměřice and the confluence of the Elbe and Ohří
After a while there is also a beautiful view of the historical center of Litoměřice surrounding Mírové náměstí. The view of the Elbe and Ohří confluence is also interesting
We are still flying in a northwesterly direction. On the left we have the hemispherical Bídnice hill (361m), on the right is the higher Plešivec (510m) and behind is the Kamýk rock formation with the ruins of the castle.
A view of the beautifully colored Bídnica surrounded by meadows and Litoměřice on the horizon.
In front of us, Plešivec rises in autumn colors with a small quarry below the peak
Hradiště (545 m)
Another interesting hill can be seen on the horizon – Hradiště (545 m)
Radobyl (399 m)
Looking back, we see one of the most iconic hills around Litoměřice – Radobýl (399 m)
The wind direction is in our favor and we fly directly over the Kamýk ruins
To the west of Plešivce there are interesting ties functioning as windbreaks
The first view of the Elbe canyon
We fly around Trabice hill (429 m) and a beautiful view of the Elbe canyon opens up

Encounter with a rogal
We are slowly approaching the Elbe and we are certainly not alone in the air.
Crossing the Elbe
We fly over the Elbe just a short distance from the village of Sebuzín
Above the Elbe Canyon
The flight over the Elbe canyon is probably the most beautiful landscape part of the entire flight
Skalky near the Moravians
We land on the meadow, which is right behind the edge of the canyon at the famous Skalka u Moravan lookout
After more than an hour of beautiful flight, we land and now the balloon has to be packed and returned to the ground.
