Lauca National Park Centre
The settlement Parinacota (4 430 m asl) doesn´t have so amazing location as Sajama village on the other side of volcanoes Parinacota and Pomerape. Due to a full range of rocky spurs covering the view it is not even possible to see the volcanoes from the village. Therefore most tourists do not come here and visit only amazing lake Chungará in the national park Lauca. On the other hand, you can enjoy here the authentic atmosphere of high-lying settlement with typical altiplano church or set out for a walk to interesting lagoons de Cotacotani or observe herds of llamas on the local large bofedal.
Church in Parinacota
The local church is really beautiful, just like almost all whitewashed altiplano churches.
Panorama of village Parinacota
From the outlook ridge directly above the village is a nice view of this semi-abandoned settlement with the church in the center. Except for car wrecks and tumbledown houses you will sometimes see here a herder of Illamas and older people.
View of the lagoon Ungallire
The path leads up to the „volcanic“ outlook point, from where is clearly visible the lagoon Ungallire in the shape of heart.
Bofedal with island
You can also set out for about 3 km long marked circuit along the volcanic surroundings of the village. But it is not as amazing and considerably challenging as the route around the high mountain lagoons on the other side of the border. But the start with views of bofedal Parinacota looks promising
The path of the trip circuit
The path leads slightly up the high mountain landscape with volcanic rocky ridges without any distinctive interesting peak on the horizon.
The outlook of bofedales
With increasing altitude opens a nice view of the extensive bofedales and local landscape full of volcanic hills. In bad weather it is a perfect place to lose your way.
The volcanic wasteland
You will surprisingly not see the twins Parinacota and Pomerape even from the highest points in this round trip, which can be quite disappointing, if you have expected these views.
Bofedales Parinacota
Another possible way around the village is the return along a dusty road to the main road. It is a trip that you might have to walk even if you do not want to :-). Along the way, however, you will have within reach llamas, bofedales and finally also the view of the twins, so the trip will not be that bad.
Herds of llamas
On the way to the main road you will understand, why there are still few permanent residents living in this inhospitable landscape – Ilamas thrive well here amazingly.
Parinacota and Pomerape
After you finally get away from the countless number of volcanic ridges, amazing pair of volcanoes Pariancota and Pomerape will peep out at you. So if there is no bus running on the main road for some time, you can at least look at something beautiful.
