Below the highest mountain in Bolivia
Classic trip to Sajama National Park as a Lagunas de Altura trek introduces you to all the beautiful places here. You will have breathtaking views of the highest volcano in Bolivia, including Parinacota, Pomerape and of course Nevado Sajama. In addition, you head to the unique alpine lagunas and at the end you can relax at the thermal springs.
Day 1
Journey to Sajama National Park
The first day awaits you the way to the national park. It lies just off the international highway 4 linking La Paz with Arica, and so it is relatively well accessible by public transport. You arrive here mostly around the noon, so you'll have time only to explore the surroundings of the village and enjoy the amazing sunset over the volcano Sajama.
Visit of village Sajama
Centre of Sajama National Park
If you plan to visit National Park Sajama and undertake here a nice hike or ascend some of the local amazing volcano, your starting point will be a small but picturesque village of Sajama (4,245 m asl). Except for the nice altiplano church there is not much to see, but its close surroundings offer perfect views during sunset (of the volcano Sajama) and during sunrise (of the twins Parinacota and Pomerape). So both tourists and photographers will enjoy it here a lot. continue reading
Day 2
Hiking to fumaroles and lagoons
The next day get up very early and set out either for a half-day trip to smoking fumaroles or then continue on further and make a long circuit over three high-lying lagoons. If you get here with a tent for at least two days, you can see two more lagoons or ascend the surrounding outlook peaks.
Hike Pueblo Sajama - Fumaroles
Outlook of Parinocata and Pomerape
Sajama National Park offers a variety of beautiful hikes around the local Altiplano with view of the snowy peaks of surrounding volcanoes, which are the destination for many mountaineers. One of the longest and most demanding hikes is the circuit around the high mountain lagoons – Lagunas de Altura trek. The first stage of this hike is a journey from the village of Sajama to the „geysers“, which is a small fumarole field. All the way you'll have a great view of perhaps the most famous South American volcano – Parinacota and also neighboring Pomerape and the highest mountain in Bolivia – Sajama. Along the way, you will probably not meet a living soul except for a few Ilamas and a few locals. continue reading

Day 3
Relax in the thermal waters
The next day can be relaxing. Arrange a ride to three nice stops – hot thermal springs, to the lake Huañacota with amazing reflections of volcano Sajama on its surface and to village Tomarapi with a nice church.
Other hiking opportunities
You can, of course, extend the program in the Sajama National Park with ascents to one of the local volcanoes. You will need cats to climb the 6,000.
