They been there:

Locals often use this adage when something extraordinary happened. There really was a fire in this town with thousand inhabitants in January 1904 during a heavy thunderstorm. The town lies on three islands, which are interconnected by bridges. From several peaks is a nice view of the harbor (major fishing center), remote mountain peaks to the east and a number of adjacent islands and islets. Walks along the sea, ascents to the outlook places and tour around the town, all this is a relaxing day in Alesund.

Fishing boat

It is possible to get easily by car to the westernmost island of Alesund and park (free of charge) in the parking lot of the marine aquarium complex. Along the coast leads a comfortable path, from where is a nice view of the sea and numerous fishing boats.

Alesund

Directly above the buildings of marine aquarium is hill Olsfjellet. Broad path, replaced by narrow one takes us to a height of 107 meters asl, from where is a magnificent view of Alesund. Above the town is visible another well-known outlook point, peak Aksla (189 m asl) which can be accessed by road, or possibly by ascending 418 steps.

Sunnmore

Right to the east from Ålesund tower the first mountains, reaching heights of over 1 kilometer. Due to its small proximity to the sea it gives a massive impression, like for example Sunnmore (1 586 m asl).

Godoya

This island is immediately adjacent with Alesund in the northwest. Its highest point is at 497 m asl and in the middle is lake Alnes Vatnet (at height of 254 m asl). This island looks like that from the top of the outlook top of Olsfjellet.

Harbor

You can park in the town for example at the shopping store REMA1000 (up to 1.5 hours for free) and begin a tour around the harbor. There's a lot of fishing boats: the town is one of Norway's largest exporters of dried and salted fish.

Harbor

In the very heart of the town is a port for small passenger vessels. There are also rentals, not only of motor boats, but for example also of sea kayaks.

Alesund

The town center is not very large and can be easily seen through in a relatively short period of time. Another nice outlooks are e.g. above the yellow building of one of the local schools.

Evening at fjord

It is possible to sleep in a nice camp on the shore of fjord Storfjorden about 15 km east of Alesund along the road E39. Unlike inland, there is quite difficult to find free space for parking and putting up a tent outside camps. Low July sun makes around 23rd hour an interesting atmosphere.
