In the southwest of the island of Thassos is the town of Limenaria. At its eastern end you will find the beautiful beach of Metalia. The beach is divided into two halves by a rock. Each of them has a slightly different character. The beach is one of the most photogenic in the south of the island. It is definitely worth climbing to the viewpoints on both sides of them.

The most beautiful view of Metalia beach

If you want to have the most beautiful view of Metalia beach, go to a place called Koruna Limenaria, which is like a modern-day „Stonhenge of Thassos“. There are really beautiful views from this spot on top of the cliff. From a height, you can also see the underwater rock plateau, which makes entry into the water worse due to its slipperiness.

Eastern part of the beach

When you go down the steep road to the sea, you can go to the busy western part of the beach or the free eastern part.

East end of the beach

A yellow cliff rises above the end of the beach.

The western part of the beach

If you walk to the west, there is an organized section with deckchairs and umbrellas. There are such paths made of sandbags across the rocky plateau to a greater depth. You will see this on a number of beaches where such plata are found.

Technical structures above the beach

If you want to go to the second cliff, you have to go back to the parking lot, where you will find a path up. In the vicinity there are a number of technical buildings referring to the period when lead was mined in the vicinity of the city.

Prospect number two

So we are finally at the top of the cliff and can enjoy the view from the second viewpoint. In the distance I can also see the Crown of Limenaria, where we started the tour.

A view of the wild coast

Further west, the coast is already wild, although there is another smaller beach hiding behind the rocks.

Center of former mining activity

The footpath will take you all the way to the edge of the town of Limenaria, where the so-called Speidel Castle or Limenársky Palace, or Palataki, is located (unfortunately in poor condition). It is actually something between a villa and a technical monument. It is associated with the German company Speidel, which operated mines here.
