Starting point for Titicaca
Lake Titicaca is a popular destination for travelers to Bolivia and Peru. The starting point for it on the Bolivian side of the lake is the cruise city of Copacabana. The only significant monument here is a large white cathedral. Here you can swim on the beach, pedal boat or hike to Cerro el Calvario or the Inca ruins of Horca del Inca.
In front of the basilica
Start your tour of Copacabana in the city center in Plaza 2 de Febrero. You will be right in front of the most important monument of the city – the Basilica of Our Lady of Copacabana, where it is always busy. You will find lots of stalls with souvenirs, etc.
Basilica of Our Lady of Copacabana
The local basilica is a wonderful example of colonial architecture of the 16th century. The local empty courtyard contrasts strongly with the hustle and bustle in front of the gate to the complex.
The interior of the basilica
The altar in the basilica is absolutely magnificent, worth seeing
Main street to the lake
From the cathedral you can freely descend along the main street towards the lake. According to the souvenir stalls, you will know that tourism is very developed here
Port and beach in Copacabana
In the northern part of the bay, directly below the hill Cerro el Calvario is a small port. Further south is an extensive beach. The viewpoint is on the highest hill near the city – Cerro San Sebastian (4 194m)
Copacabana beach
The beach is quite lively. The locals also like to come here on weekends. There are countless pedal boat rentals here. If you want to bathe or swim, go as far south as possible where there are significantly fewer people.
Tours directly from Copacabana
You can ascend directly from the city along the Stations of the Cross to Cerro el Calvario or the Horca del Inca cliffs. It is not a problem to get to the highest hill Cerro San Sebastian

Outlook of Copacabana
One of the two most popular places for walks in the nearby surroundings of Copacabana is the ascent to the mountain Cerro Calvario (3 975 m asl), from where is a beautiful view of both the lake Titicaca, town and the surrounding four thousand meters high mountains. The mountain itself has its unique atmosphere, especially in the evening when the candles burn here. continue reading
